How to choose electrodes for electromagnetic flowmeters in saltwater applications?

2025-03-06

Electromagnetic flowmeter is an instrument that measures liquid flow rate through the principle of electromagnetic induction, consisting of a flowmeter body and electrodes.

1、 The electrode principle of electromagnetic flowmeter

Electromagnetic flowmeter is an instrument that measures liquid flow rate through the principle of electromagnetic induction, consisting of a flowmeter body and electrodes. The electrodes of an electromagnetic flowmeter are mainly composed of a measuring electrode and a reference electrode. The measuring electrode is installed on the inside of the pipeline, and when the measured fluid passes through the pipeline, a magnetic field is generated around the electrode. When the fluid flows through the electrode, the conductivity in the fluid interacts with the magnetic field, and an electrical signal is induced on the electrode to measure the flow rate of the liquid.

2、 Principles for electrode selection in saltwater applications

  1. High anti-corrosion requirements

The chemical properties of saltwater are quite unique, making it easy to corrode and oxidize metal electrodes. Therefore, in saltwater applications, the electrodes of electromagnetic flow meters need to have strong anti-corrosion capabilities.

  2. Choose appropriate electrode materials

In saltwater applications, commonly used electrode materials include stainless steel, titanium, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Stainless steel electrodes can resist corrosion and are relatively affordable, but for high concentration saltwater, stainless steel electrodes may corrode, leading to inaccurate measurements. Titanium electrodes have strong corrosion resistance, but they are relatively expensive and are generally suitable for measuring high concentration saltwater. Platinum, gold, and silver electrodes have good corrosion resistance, but their prices are also relatively high.

  3. Choose the appropriate electrode structure

In saltwater applications, the electrode structure needs to be as simple as possible to avoid overly complex structures that can easily accumulate salt deposits, thereby affecting the service life of the electrode. At the same time, the contact area around the electrode should be minimized as much as possible to avoid salt water crystal adhesion and damage to the electrode.

  3、 Precautions

  1. The electrode selected for the flowmeter should match the concentration of the saltwater, otherwise it may cause corrosion and damage to the electrode.

  2. It is generally recommended to install the electrode of the saltwater flowmeter on the side wall of the pipeline, rather than at the center of the pipeline.

  3. Regularly check the anti-corrosion coating of the saltwater electrode to prevent corrosion and oxidation from affecting the service life of the electrode.

  4. Avoid long-term disuse that can cause battery polarization, corrosion, and damage to the electrodes.

In short, selecting the appropriate electrode is crucial for the use of saltwater electromagnetic flow meters. When selecting electrodes, it is necessary to choose suitable materials and structures based on the actual situation of the saltwater. Meanwhile, attention should be paid to usage and maintenance.
